چکیده
Abstract. This paper studies the gradient flow of a regularized Mumford-Shah functional proposed by Ambrosio and Tortorelli (1990, 1992) for image segmentation, and adopted by Esedoglu and Shen (2002) for image inpainting. It is shown that the gradient flow with L2×L∞ initial data possesses a global weak solution, and it has a unique global in time strong solution, which has at most finite number of point singularities in the space-time, when the initial data are in H × H ∩ L∞. A family of fully discrete approximation schemes using low order finite elements is proposed for the gradient flow. Convergence of a subsequence (resp. the whole sequence) of the numerical solutions to a weak solution (resp. the strong solution) of the gradient flow is established as the mesh sizes tend to zero, and optimal and suboptimal order error estimates, which depend on 1 ε and 1 kε only in low polynomial order, are derived

A Geometric-Functional-Based Image Segmentation and Inpainting
The Mumford-Shah functional minimization, and related algorithms for image segmentation, involve a tradeoff between a twodimensional image structure and one-dimensional parametric curves (contours) that surround objects or distinct regions in the image. We propose an alternative functional that is independent of parameterization; it is a geometric functional which is given in terms of the geome...

Brain MR image segmentation is an important research topic in medical image analysis area. In this paper, we propose an active contour model for brain MR image segmentation, based on a generalized level set formulation of the Mumford-Shah functional. The model embeds explicitly gradient information into the Mumford-Shah functional, and incorporates in a generic framework both regional and gradi...

We study a regularized Mumford-Shah functional in the context of joint prior models for blur identification, blind image deconvolution and segmentation. For the ill-posed regularization problem, it is hard to find a good initial value for ensuring the soundness of the convergent value. A newly introduced prior solution space of point spread functions in a double regularized Bayesian estimation ...

متن کاملThe Piecewise Smooth Mumford-Shah Functional on an Arbitrary Graph
The Mumford-Shah functional has had a major impact on a variety of image analysis problems, including image segmentation and filtering, and, despite being introduced over two decades ago, it is still in widespread use. Present day optimization of the Mumford-Shah functional is predominated by active contour methods. Until recently, these formulations necessitated optimization of the contour by ...
